Fuelberth Recognized as an ASHS Certified Horticulturist

Barbara L. Fuelberth, Nursery Manager at Ferguson's Garden Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa, has successfully passed the examination and met all qualifications to be recognized as a Certified Horticulturist of the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS). The examination was held on November 5, 2010 at the University of Minnesota, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska.

Fuelberth, who was born and raised on a farm in Southeast Nebraska, said “I always thought of gardening as just another chore.” After completing her degree in Music Education, however, she discovered a love of everything green and growing and started vegetable gardening as a hobby. She received her Master Gardener training and began working at Ferguson's Garden Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa, as a summer job.  In 2009, she started full-time at Ferguson's and became Nursery Manager in November of 2010.

The ASHS Certified Horticulturist program is a national certification program developed for horticultural practitioners by The American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) in an effort to raise the professional bar of Horticulture as a profession and a career. The program’s objective is to provide the public and those in government and industry with a means to identify those professionals who have demonstrated, through a professionally developed exam and education program, that they exhibit thorough knowledge of horticultural practices. Candidates are evaluated on their knowledge of: Landscape Design and Maintenance; Production of Fruits, Vegetables, Turf and Ornamental Plants; Shipping and Handling of Final Product; Propagation; Monitoring and Testing; Diagnosing and Managing Plant Problems and Business Practices. Certification affords the public and those in government and industry the opportunity to make an informed selection of services based on the knowledge represented by the certification designation
